The San Francisco 49ers are apparently ready to fire head coach Mike Singletary.

The 49ers were the preseason favorite to win the NFC West but never lived up to the lofty expectations. A loss to the St. Louis Rams on Sunday officially eliminated them from the playoff race with a 5-10 record.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported team owner Jed York has begun a search for a new general manager and ultimately a new head coach. Singletary may not even be on the sidelines for the team's finale against Arizona next Sunday, according to the newspaper. The 49ers have been working without a GM since firing Scot McCloughan back in March.

Singletary has flip-flopped between starting quarterbacks this season and had an on-field confrontation with QB Troy Smith on Sunday.

The Hall-of-Fame linebacker is 18-22 in two-plus seasons as 49ers head coach, which includes a surprising 8-8 campaign in 2009.
