Despite the fact that the Seattle Seahawks appear to be a team in a death spiral, having lost six of their past eight games, they are sticking with quarterback Matt Hasselbeck in their bid to emerge victorious in the embarrassment known as the NFC West.

At 6-8 the Seahawks find themselves tied atop the division with the St. Louis Rams. The San Francisco 49ers are a game back at 5-9 but still have a shot to win the division.

But to prove how truly wretched the division is, the Seahawks believe their best bet remains with Hasselbeck even though in his past two games he's thrown six interceptions and has lost two fumbles.

But on Sunday in Tampa against the Bucs, Hasselbeck will get the start.

"We're going with Matt," head coach Pete Carroll said. "Matt's been our quarterback. He's the guy that's given us a chance all throughout, and he gives us our best chance to finish off right. I'm excited in that sense that he's going to pull this thing together with us.

"We have to play well around him. We have to take care of the quarterback in all ways protection-wise. We need to run the football. We need to play better on defence so it's not all turning into the focus going to one guy and people can go ahead and try to point the finger. That's not what's going on around here. We're tuned in that we need to play better football to give him a chance to play the way he's capable."

It's nice that Carroll is still a believer and all that.
