EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - The New York Giants predictably placed Steve Smith on injured reserve Thursday, effectively ending the wide receiver's season.

The club announced Wednesday that the wide receiver suffered a knee injury during Monday night's 21-3 victory over the Minnesota Vikings in Detroit that will require season-ending surgery.

The contest was Smith's first after missing the previous four with a partially-torn pectoral muscle.

Smith caught 48 passes for 529 yards and three touchdowns this year.

In other moves, the club signed tight end Jake Ballard to the active roster and added defensive back Ben Hannula to the practice squad.
