BETHESDA, MD - Hunter Smith, who botched the hold on a potential game-tying extra point attempt Sunday, was released on Tuesday by the Washington Redskins.

Comcast SportsNet Washington reported that Smith has been replaced as the team's punter by Sam Paulescu.

Washington scored a touchdown in the final minute against Tampa Bay on Sunday, drawing within 17-16, but Smith allowed a high snap on the extra point attempt to go through his hands and the Redskins lost.

In nine games this season, Smith averaged 40.5 yards on 57 punts.

Paulescu played in one game for Washington last season when he filled in for Smith, who was nursing a groin injury. He also appeared in five contests for Tampa Bay in '09, averaging 42.6 yards on 24 punts.
