Rams the best of a bad lot

TORONTO - What would a week be like without taking another kick at the NFC West?

Thanks to New Orleans’ romp over St. Louis and San Francisco’s pounding of Seattle, it looks like a pretty good bet that the NFL’s worst nightmare is about to come true.

That would be having a winner of one of its division finish with a losing record.

Can you really say ‘We’re No. 1’ when you have a 7-9 record?

The results of Sunday’s action leaves the Rams and the Seahawks tied atop the NFC West, both teams with 6-7 records. The 49ers, meanwhile, are now just a game back at 5-8.

So, just who is going to emerge as the winner?

The next two opponents for the Seahawks are the Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, so there’s no wins there.

The 49ers next week are in San Diego, so that should give them their ninth loss of the season.

Then there’s St. Louis and their schedule gives them the best opportunity to emerge with their heads held high.

Next Sunday they have a home date against the Chiefs, who were hopeless without quarterback Matt Cassel due to his appendectomy.

If he can’t play next week either, it’s advantage Rams.

The final two weeks they go against their two division rivals, first the 49ers at home and then the finale in Seattle. The Rams are the NFL’s last hope.
