Merriman is over and out

TORONTO - The Shawne Merriman experiment in Buffalo is over before it got started.

On Saturday, the Bills announced that Merriman, a one-time Pro Bowl linebacker for the San Diego Chargers, had been placed on the season-ending injured reserve list.

Merriman never played one second for the Bills after they claimed him Nov. 3 to see if he could add some sock to what had been until then a punchless defence.

In his first practice with the Bills, Merriman strained his Achilles tendon, an injury he could not recover from.

He is scheduled for free agency in 2011 but in all likelihood his career is over.

With the Bills, there was no career at all and the cost to the team is $1.7 million US.

That’s an expensive swing and a miss for the organization.
