CHARLOTTE - DeAngelo Williams will not play again this season, as the Carolina Panthers placed the running back on injured reserve Wednesday.

Williams missed the past three games because of a sprained right foot, and the 27-year-old will watch the remainder of the season on the sideline. The Panthers currently sit at an NFC-worst 1-8.

"He was probably two to three weeks away (from being healthy enough to play)," Panthers head coach John Fox said of Williams. "It was healing a little slower than originally expected, and we needed a roster spot."

With the open roster spot, Carolina signed guard C.J. Davis off of the practice squad and added running back Jeremiah Johnson to the practice squad.

In his fifth season out of Memphis, Williams, coming off back-to-back 1,000- yard campaigns, rushed for just 361 yards and one touchdown. He did not eclipse the 100-yard plateau in any of the six games he played.

The former first-round pick has a career 5.0 yards-per-carry average with 35 total touchdowns -- 31 rushing -- and 4,211 yards on the ground.
