PHILADELPHIA -- The National Football League fined Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Ernie Sims $50,000 on Wednesday for an incident in an October 24 contest.

Sims was docked for his actions towards Tennessee Titans receiver Lavelle Hawkins termed as "unnecessarily striking a defenseless receiver in the neck and head area with his forearms," according to a league spokesman quoted in the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The hefty amount of the fine may have been as a result of the NFL's new rules regarding hard hits, as well as the fact that Sims was fined once each in the 2008 and 2009 seasons, while with Detroit, for unnecessary roughness.
