EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New York Giants defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka was placed on injured reserve with a bulging disc in his neck, head coach Tom Coughlin confirmed on Thursday.

It's unclear when and how Kiwanuka suffered the injury. The 27-year-old was off to a great start to the season with four sacks and nine solo tackles in three games before being sidelined. He last appeared in a 29-10 loss to Tennessee on September 26 and registered one sack with four tackles.

A few days later, after practicing with a stiff neck, Kiwanuka underwent an MRI and CAT scan that revealed a bulging cervical disc. He has missed the last four games -- all New York wins.

To fill Kiwanuka's roster spot, the Giants signed kick returner Will Blackmon, who had played for Green Bay the past four seasons, but was released following training camp after agreeing to an injury settlement. He is expected to take over kick return duties for Darius Reynaud when the Giants resume their schedule on November 7 at Seattle.

In 32 career games with the Packers, Blackmon has returned 47 punts for 515 yards and three touchdowns and added 66 kick returns for 1,393 yards.
