Former NFL star Junior Seau will not face any charges following his arrest on suspicion of domestic violence after an alleged altercation with his girlfriend.

The former San Diego Chargers star hit the headlines on Monday when he was briefly detained by California police investigating allegations of assault.

The case was handed to the San Diego County District Attorney's Office but on Friday, officials decided not to press charges against Seau due to lack of evidence.

The District Attorney says, "As with every case we review, we have an ethical duty to file charges only when we believe we can prove them beyond a reasonable doubt."

Seau was also hospitalized on Monday when he drove his car off a cliff, hours after his arrest.

He was treated overnight for cuts and bruises and was discharged on Tuesday morning.

The star is not believed to have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol, but results from a blood test taken after the accident are pending.
