GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy announced Monday that Jermichael Finley has been placed on injured reserve, ending the tight end's season.

Finley suffered a knee injury in Week 5 against the Washington Redskins and underwent surgery with the hope of him making a comeback later this season. But McCarthy opted to shut Finley down because it was in the best interests of the player.

The Texas product finished the 2010 campaign with 21 receptions for 301 yards and one touchdown.

The Packers also acquired safety Anthony Smith from the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for a conditional draft pick. Smith signed with Green Bay in March 2009 but was among the final cuts in September. He played for St. Louis and Jacksonville last season and started three games for the Jaguars this year.

He was originally drafted in the third round by Pittsburgh in 2006 and spent his first three seasons with the Steelers.
