METAIRIE, La. -- The New Orleans Saints added some running back depth by re-signing veteran Ladell Betts on Wednesday.
The 31-year-old, who was released by the Saints on the final cut-down day in training camp, is expected to help fill the void in the backfield left when Reggie Bush suffered a broken right leg in the team's 25-22 win at San Francisco on Monday.
Prior to coming to New Orleans, Betts was part of a 10-player veteran purge by Washington in March.
Betts played eight seasons with the Redskins after being selected in the second round of the 2002 draft out of Iowa. In 103 games -- 13 starts -- he has rushed for 3,176 yards and 13 touchdowns and caught 165 passes for 1,505 yards and three scores.
In a related move, the Saints released reserve running back DeShawn Wynn.
