FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The New York Jets' defense received a big blow Tuesday when head coach Rex Ryan announced starting defensive tackle Kris Jenkins suffered a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during Monday's season-opening 10-9 loss to Baltimore.

An MRI exam on Tuesday confirmed the injury.

It marks the second consecutive year Jenkins has torn his left ACL. The 31- year-old appeared in only six games in 2009 after suffering the injury.

Jenkins' latest setback occurred in the opening quarter when his knee bent awkwardly after a run play by Baltimore's LeRon McClain. The Jets' run-stopper walked gingerly off the field under his own power and did not return to the game.

The 6-foot-4, 360-pounder was in his third season with the Jets and totaled 3 1/2 sacks and 64 tackles in 23 starts since coming to New York after spending seven seasons with Carolina.
