Goodbye Jim Sorgi. Hello Sage Rosenfels?
The Giants announced yesterday that Sorgi, their backup quarterback, will miss the season with a shoulder injury. It leaves New York vulnerable at one of the most important positions on a football team.
Eli Manning is the unquestioned No. 1 but he's just one turned ankle from putting this team in a situation where the season could be a write-off. There isn't anyone with experience to back him up. Sorgi's injury leaves only the youngish Rhett Bomar and Dominic Randolph behind Manning.
Meanwhile, Rosenfels is making $2.6 million as the No. 3 quarterback in Minnesota with little chance of seeing the playing field.
Tarvaris Jackson is locked in as the backup to Brett Favre. A deal would clear some salary space for Minnesota, which also has Joe Webb as a project. Rosenfels knows what's expected in the backup role and would fit well behind Manning.
