Leinart needs a hug

Matt Leinart isn't sure what coach Ken Whisenhunt sees in him. But, obviously, it isn't a starting NFL quarterback.

And, that makes Leinart believe he's getting the bum's rush.

Just two games into the pre-season, and working with a crippled receiving corps, Leinart was replaced by Derek Anderson as the Arizona Cardinals starting quarterback Saturday against the Chicago Bears.

Leinart isn't happy. "I don't know how you judge performance when you have 13 pass attempts to the other guy's 40," Leinart told the Arizona Republic. "I'm disappointed. I've done everything to this point that they've asked me to and more. I feel I've been efficient. I've been accurate. I haven't turned the ball over."

But pencilled in as the replacement for the retired Kurt Warner, he also hasn't been able to move the offence. Arizona has failed to score a point with Leinart at the controls this pre-season and couldn't even get a first down in the three series he played against Tennessee. In the first two games he was 10 for 13 for 77 yards, his longest completion a 16-yarder.

This is the second time since winning the Heisman and turning pro in 2006 that Leinart has been benched by Whisenhunt after being given the starter's job.

"I don't make these decisions and sometime you don't know why decisions are made," Leinart said. "I really don't know. It seems like every preseason there is something I'm trying to get through."

It hasn't helped that Leinart's receiving corps looks like a MASH ward. Pro Bowler Larry Fitzgerald (sprained right knee), Early Doucet (abdominal strain), Darren Mougey (broken hand) and Andre Roberts (shoulder) have all been hurt.
