Rogers turf fast track, or field of screams?

Lee Evans hopes the choppy Rogers Centre turf does not digress into a Field of Screams this afternoon.

An examination of the playing surface yesterday afternoon revealed that the turf is made up of hundreds of rectangular panels. Every few yards, the seams between the panels clearly are evident, leading to potential safety issues.

"Just looking at it, it might be a problem," Evans said, scanning the condition of the field after the Bills afternoon walkthrough. "There definitely are more seams than any other field we play on."

Evans said the field might be an issue that is brought up during future think-tank sessions concerning upcoming Bills games at the Rogers Centre in coming seasons.

"But to this point, we haven't had any problems," Evans said. "And until we do -- which, hopefully, won't happen -- we'll deal with it.

"It's a fast track. You can get a lot of speed up on it."

The Bills' 24-21 pre-season victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers at Rogers Centre on Aug. 4 was a testament to that, featuring a 40-yard touchdown bomb from Ben Roethlisberger to a streaking Santonio Holmes, and a blazing 95-yard kickoff return by Bills rookie Leodis McKelvin.

Afterward, Roethlisberger praised everything ... except the field.

"The stadium is awesome," Roethlisberger said at the time. "The turf leaves a lot to be desired but to be up here with the fans has been awesome."
