You would think that, after suffering through such a miserable campaign, Dan Goodspeed could not get out of town fast enough and checking out options to get back into the NFL.

Not so, says the import offensive lineman.

Had a fun year

"Our record (5-12) aside, I've had a fun year up here and sometimes, that counts more than other things," said the Winnipeg import offensive lineman, who has played for both Miami and Washington down south. "The fans here are great. That's the biggest thing. The people up here are behind the team and the tradition.

"I had a good season. I'd like to come back and compete for a Grey Cup, that's the build for next year, right? With the line we've got and everybody meshes well, and with the team we got, who knows what could happen?"

However, there are some NFL teams who have expressed interest in the 6-foot-6, 300-pound Goodspeed, said club GM Brendan Taman.

"He's a good character guy and a good addition to the team, and I hope we can keep him," said Taman, who plans to offer him a new contract.

Goodspeed is heading into his option year, which gives him that NFL window of opportunity over the winter, starting in mid-December.

"I'll see what's on the (NFL) table and everything," said Goodspeed, 28. "I wouldn't say all options are out but I spent time in the NFL and I'm out here and I like it here. I'll see where it goes from there."

If Goodspeed does return, he will bring his wife up from Tampa, Fla., but would not stay here through the winter, he said.

SAD DAY: Bomber head coach Jim Daley returned to yesterday's practice after rushing home to Calgary to be with his black Lab, Mac, just before he was put down Wednesday. An emotional Daley said it was important for him to be there with the dog, who had been suffering from cancer, during his last hour.

"It was very tough," he said of losing his long-time companion.

HASHMARKS: OL Matt Sheridan and Aaron Fiacconi (knees) and DE Gavin Walls (hamstring) will all test their injuries today. OL Dan Gyetvai (knee) and DBs Stanford Samuels (knee) Boyd Barrett (turf toe) are out ... Although OL Mike Abou-Mechrek limped off the field Wednesday, he was right back at it yesterday ... LB Ron Ockimey is getting a lot of work at DE in case Walls, who leads the CFL with 12 sacks, can't play. DL Joe Fleming is also taking turns there ... It's official, Blue and Gold: 75 Years of Blue Bomber Glory is a best-seller now. The book, which was edited by CJOB's Bob Irving, has sold 5,000 copies. Another 4,000 are being produced and will soon be available.
