Bruschi wants game action

Now that Tedy Bruschi has been cleared to play, good luck to Patriots coach Bill Belichick in holding him back.

The Pro Bowl linebacker returned to practice this week after recovering from a mild off-season stroke. But Bruschi doesn't want to ease back into action and has already targeted the Super Bowl champs' next game -- Oct. 30 against the Buffalo Bills -- for his return.

"I'm going to try," Bruschi said when asked if he'd be back for the prime time game in Foxboro. "I'm not going to make any guarantees or promises ... I'm going to give it my best shot."

The Patriots (3-3) are tied for first with with the Bills in the AFC East but have struggled on defence. They have only one interception after snagging 20 last year (three by Bruschi).

"Time will tell and hopefully he can help us as much as he can," linebacker Rosevelt Colvin said. "Tedy can't play all 11 positions. We have to have 10 other guys out there doing their job."

IDONIJE GETS A SHOT

Undrafted free agent Israel Idonije of Brandon, Man. was activated for the first time this season as a backup defensive end for the Chicago Bears.

Best news for the former CIAU star is that he replaced 2003 first-round draft choice Michael Haynes.

"He did an outstanding job," Bears head coach Lovie Smith said of Idonije, who played college ball at the University of Manitoba and dressed in 15 games for the Bears last season. "As we look at all of our backup positions, they need to play and contribute on special teams.

"We made the decision to go with Israel and I'm glad we did. He was our top (performer) on special teams."

TICKED TIKI

New York Giants running back Tiki Barber had just 15 touches during his team's 16-13 loss to the Cowboys.

And the usually cheerful veteran wasn't too pleased.

"I do what I'm told," Barber said. "I'm not a coach. That's a slipper slope and I decline to step on that one."

Not a bad move considering the coach, Tom Coughlin, is not one to be crossed.
