Who's in first? ... The Bills!

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- In the NFL, first-place teams come in all shapes, sizes and styles.

And as incredible as it may seem, the Buffalo Bills are one of them. Back-to-back home wins over divisional opponents have the Bills at 3-3 and in a share of first in the AFC East.

"It's not hard to believe, it took a lot of hard work," Bills quarterback Kelly Holcomb said yesterday after the Bills' solid 27-17 win over the New York Jets.

Two weeks ago, coming off a miserable loss to the New Orleans Saints, it would have been impossible to fathom.

But in a division that has inched toward mediocrity, the Bills are in the thick of it. With both the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins losing yesterday, Buffalo moved to the top and have an all-important 2-0 record in divisional play.

"Everybody's just waiting for somebody to take off," Bills coach Mike Mularkey said of the AFC East. "We're all sitting here clumped together."

And now for the reality check. Two wins at home against cushy competition is nice, but the Bills need to prove it on the road where they will be for six of their 10 remaining games.

"The big thing is, we dug ourselves out of a hole," Bills safety Lawyer Milloy said. "We accepted the challenge and responded at home. That was the first step."
