BRISTOL, Conn. (Ticker) -- Quincy Carter, the troubled backup quarterback of the New York Jets, reportedly is back in a treatment center.

According to an ESPN report, the 27-year-old Carter has had a setback in his drug rehabilitation and been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. He reportedly has entered the treatment center to address both issues.

Carter, who spent time in treatment programs in January 2003 and the summer of 2004, was released by the Dallas Cowboys on August 4 -- just days after reports surfaced that he failed a drug test.

Three weeks after being cut by Dallas, Carter found a home with the Jets, signing a one-year, $555,000 deal. He saw significant action in weeks 10, 11 and 12 when starter Chad Pennington was sidelined by a shoulder injury.

This postseason, Carter reportedly was with his ailing mother in Georgia and unavailable to play. He becomes an unrestricted free agent in March.
