Eagles stifle Vick

For the Philadelphia Eagles, this was the NFC Championship all right -- the No Fear Championship.

They didn't fear the frigid weather blitzing their home field and they didn't fear the past.

And though they respected his ability and the threat that goes with it, they certainly didn't flinch at the reputation and hype of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick.

HIT HIM HARD

"Last week all the talk was about the Michael Vick experience against St. Louis," Eagles linebacker Ike Reese said following Philly's 27-10 victory yesterday.

"This isn't the St. Louis defence. This game was on us, it was on our shoulders. Every time we hit (Vick) we wanted to put a helmet on him and make him feel it."

The Eagles did plenty of that, limiting the elusive 24-year-old star to just 26 yards rushing.

There was defensive end Jevon Kearse getting off the line quickly to force Vick's hand.

There was linebacker Jeremiah Trotter getting through to make him honest.

And there was another defensive end, Derrick Burgess, who administered two of the four Eagle sacks for a combined loss of 33 yards.

"They talked all week about (how) they were going to run the ball, the No. 1 rushing team in the league," Trotter said. "We know what type of defence we have."

The Eagles may have an added dimension on offence as well. Receiver Terrell Owens, who suffered a fractured fibula against Dallas on Dec. 19, could return to action in Jacksonville.

He was urging the crowd to make noise from the Eagles' sideline.

"He wasn't one of the best looking cheerleaders we had, I'll say that," Reese said.

"We made a deal with T.O. We told him we'd prolong the season as long as we can to get him back on the field. He is a big reason we're going to the Super Bowl."

GETTING THERE

Though Vick took his lumps yesterday, including several crushing hits, Falcons coach Jim Mora believes his young quarterback will have his day.

"I think he's already knocking on the door," Mora said. "Michael Vick accomplished some tremendous things this year for a 24-year-old quarterback. "But Michael is just one part of 11 on the field."
