DIEDRICK GETS A SHOT

- After spending time on his third NFL practice squad, former Toronto high school star Dahrran Diedrick may finally get some real-life game action tomorrow. The former running back at Nebraska was signed to a contract with the Washington Redskins and promoted from the practices roster.

The spot became available when Clinton Portis was placed on injured reserve earlier in the week. Diedrick spent much of 2003 on the San Diego Chargers practice roster before eventually being released. For the early part of this season, he had a similar role with the Green Bay Packers.

QUICK HITS

- Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb doesn't understand how many are writing off his Eagles because of the injury to go-to receiver Terrell Owens. Considering the team has been to the past three NFC championship games, he may have a point. "We sign T.O. and we turn into the world's greatest football team," McNabb said. "We lose T.O. and we get buried in the dirt. It is said that with one player down, everybody feels that the season is over. T.O. isn't the only player out there." ... Only two teams have qualified for the playoffs five of the past six seasons (including this one), Philadelphia and the Indianapolis Colts. The St. Louis Rams would be a third if they sneak into an NFL spot ... The worst return on investment in the NFL this season is the Tennessee Titans, who are a lowly 4-11 vs. the spread.
