Chiefs are in tough

KANSAS CITY, Miss. (Ticker) -- What will Bill Belichick devise to slow down the Kansas City Chiefs?

The struggling Chiefs test their top-rated offence against one of the best defensive minds in the game in Belichick when they meet the New England Patriots on Monday night.

Known for his multiple schemes to frustrate opposing offences, Belichick has guided the Patriots to two Super Bowl titles in the last three seasons with the play of the defence being a major reason why. Last season, the Patriots allowed a league-low 238 points.

New England has been hit hard by injuries to its secondary but still is tied with Pittsburgh for the AFC's best record. Starting cornerbacks Ty Law and Tyrone Poole both are sidelined.

Belichick has turned to using Troy Brown, the franchise's third all-time leading receiver, in spot duty at cornerback. Brown had an interception in last week's 29-6 rout of Buffalo, when the Patriots allowed just 125 total yards and eight first downs.

The Patriots have won 23 of their last 24 games, including playoffs.

Belichick's defence will get its stiffest test to date against the Chiefs, who lead the league by averaging 422.1 yards per game. Kansas City is third in scoring offence at 28.6 points per contest.

But the Chiefs will be without one of their major weapons for the second straight week with running back Priest Holmes listed as doubtful with a knee injury. Holmes has rushed for 892 yards and leads the NFL with 15 touchdowns.

Derrick Blaylock was more than an adequate replacement for Holmes in last week's 27-20 loss at New Orleans. He rushed for 186 yards and a touchdown on 33 attempts.

Expected to challenge the Patriots in the AFC this season, the Chiefs have been among the NFL's biggest disappointments. Kansas City's struggles could be attributed to a defence that ranks near the bottom of the league in scoring and yards allowed.

The Chiefs' defence will be tested by Corey Dillon, who has rushed for at least 100 yards in his last four games.
