ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) -- Referee Johnny Grier tore a muscle in his lower right leg in the first quarter of Sunday's game between the New England Patriots and Buffalo Bills.

Grier did not return after he came up limping on the Bills' first offensive play of the game, Drew Bledsoe's 55-yard pass to Lee Evans. Grier appeared to be hurt as he was attempting to follow the play up the left sideline.

Grier spent part of the first half with his right leg wrapped on the Bills sideline.

The Bills said X-rays of the official's leg were negative.

Back judge Scott Green took over for Grier with the officiating unit down to six.
