USC is investigating cornerback Josh Shaw's story of jumping from a second story apartment to save his nephew who was struggling in a pool.

Trojans head coach Steve Sarkisian said Tuesday morning that the school had received numerous calls questioning the accuracy of Shaw's story.

The school has kept Shaw away from the media.

Shaw, a team captain who is now sidelined indefinitely, said the incident left him with two injured ankles.

A few hours after being voted a team captain on Saturday, Shaw attended a family function. He said he saw his 7-year-old nephew, who does not know how to swim, struggling in a pool.

According to his story, Shaw jumped from a second-floor balcony onto concrete. He then crawled into the pool and helped his nephew to safety, according to a release from the school.

Shaw, a fifth-year senior who started 14 games last season, suffered two high ankle sprains.

"I would do it again for whatever kid it was, it did not have to be my nephew," Shaw said in a statement released by the school. "My ankles really hurt, but I am lucky to be surrounded by the best trainers and doctors in the world. I am taking my rehab one day at a time, and I hope to be back on the field as soon as possible."

"That was a heroic act by Josh, putting his personal safety aside. But that's the kind of person he is," Sarkisian said after initially hearing about the incident. "It is unfortunate that he'll be sidelined for a while and we will miss his leadership and play, but I know he'll be working hard to get back on the field as soon as possible."

Shaw's nephew Carter is a bit "traumatized," but physically OK.
