Man allegedly beat son for liking Oklahoma Sooners over Oklahoma State Cowboys By QMI Agency

A 41-year-old Perkins, Okla., man is accused of repeatedly beating his nine-year-old son because the boy is a fan of the Oklahoma Sooners as opposed to the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

Police say the boy told a classmate that he roots for the Sooners and not the Cowboys. The boy’s father, Gannon Mendez, allegedly reacted by beating the boy with a wooden paddle, an NBC affiliate in Oklahoma City reported Tuesday.

Investigators said the alleged beating by the suspect, who is charged with one count of child abuse, was not a one-time incident.

Prosecutors claim Mendez would repeatedly take his son to a football field and make him run until he puked.

An affidavit from the victim also claims he was forced to put soap in his mouth, his nose was squeezed until it bled and he would be woken up at 30-minute intervals at night to do push-ups.

The accused also apparently has a history with Oklahoma State athletics. He allegedly provided money and benefits to Cowboys players in recent years, leading the university to ban athletes from contacting him.
