EBay will not allow the sale of tickets on its site to Joe Paterno's memorial service Thursday, the company said Tuesday.
However, at least one ticket was listed for auction on the site with a recent bid of more than $66,000.
"EBay's event ticket resale policy does not allow the sale of tickets to events in which all tickets are free to the public," EBay told Reuters in an e-mail.
The university was issuing tickets for "A Memorial to Joe" for free with a two-ticket per person limit. All tickets have been distributed.
Reuters found a posting for one ticket on EBay Tuesday afternoon. Three bids had been submitted, the most recent listed as $66,766.66, according to the webpage on the site.
Nittany Lions players past and present, including Franco Harris, arrived at the Penn State campus spiritual centre Tuesday to attend a visitation for Paterno, who led the football program for more than 50 years.
Paterno's family revealed in November that he had lung cancer, just days after he was fired for failing to intervene when former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky was accused of molesting boys.
Scott Paterno described his father as "serenely calm" before his death on Sunday and wasn't upset at the way his Penn State career ended.
Another son, Jay Paterno, said his father hoped justice would be served for Sandusky's alleged victims.
