GLENDALE, Ariz. — How do you stop Cam Newton?

Auburn coach Gene Chizik doesn’t have the answer right now, but football being football, coaches at every level are looking for a way to stop the dominant dual-threat quarterback.

“I don’t know how long it will be, but they will find a way to stack enough people in there,” Chizik said this week. “Someone will figure out a way to do enough on the perimeter to be able to prepare for offences a little differently than they have.”

Wildcat

Chizik said the Newton phenomenon has attracted the attention of pro coaches who are trying to find a way to deal with multi-dimensional quarterbacks currently in the NFL.

“We even get NFL guys calling us and saying: ‘Tell us about wildcat. Tell us about what your thoughts in defending it,’ ” Chizik said.

“There are so many versions of it, but especially if you have an athletic quarterback, he throws a whole new dimension in there, that can run and throw.”

Even more dangerous in the case of Newton is his physical approach. When the QB puts his head down and turns into a fullback, he is that tougher to defend.

“When he runs the ball, he is so physical,” Chizik said. “When he can beat you so many ways, how do you stop him.”
