Hawkeyes won't find a safe Arbor

When 24th-ranked Iowa visits the Big House tomorrow to take on No. 18 Michigan, this Big Ten rivalry will have more on the line than in previous years. It all started with Iowa dismantling Michigan 34-9 at Ann Arbor two years ago. QB Brad Banks, the former Heisman Trophy runner-up who's now with the Ottawa Renegades, handed the Wolverines their worst home loss in more than 25 years.

Last year, Michigan was unable to avenge that loss when the Hawkeyes pulled away in the second half.

This week, the Wolverines again seek revenge as their seniors particularly want to go out on a winning note.

Unfortunately for Michigan, Iowa is coming off one of its worst-ever losses, a 44-7 pounding by Arizona State. You can expect a much better effort from Kirk Ferentz's squad this week.

Still, Michigan's talent and home-field advantage should be the difference in what has become one of the better rivalries in the Big Ten.

The picks are:

No. 1 USC (-22) at Stanford -- The Trojans have walked over their last two opponents and now face a much-improved Stanford team. USC can't risk looking ahead to Cal next week ... USC 38-24.

Rice (+32) at No. 5 Texas -- The season won't officially get started for the Longhorns until they play Oklahoma. Another easy win ... Texas 42-13.

Louisiana Tech (-23) at No. 8 Tennessee -- Vols should cruise to another win as they get ready for conference play ... Tennessee 34-10.

Clemson (+17.5) at No. 11 Florida State -- Battle of the Bowden family has father Bobby ahead of son Tom 5-1 in the series. Make it 6-1 ... FSU 27-17.

Syracuse (+25) at No. 12 Virginia -- The Cavaliers have manhandled each of their opponents this season and the Orange have been awful. The only question is how many points Virginia will score ... Virginia 45-10.

Mississippi State (+28.5) at No. 13 LSU -- The Tigers have SEC-rival Georgia on deck, but should have no problem this week even if they are looking ahead ... LSU 45-9.

Air Force (+20.5) at No. 14 Utah -- The Utes continue to impress on both sides of the ball and should roll over the Falcons ... Utah 42-10.

No. 15 Purdue (-20.5) at Illinois -- Purdue has way too many playmakers on offence for Illinois to keep this close ... Purdue 38-13.

Kentucky (+19) at No. 16 Florida -- The Gators got jobbed last week on a bad call to lose to the Vols. They won't need to worry about the game being close this week ... Florida 37-17.

No. 24 Iowa (+13) at No. 18 Michigan -- The Wolverines should not be favoured by double digits over anyone, let alone an Iowa team that has defeated them two years in a row ... Michigan 20-14.

Northwestern (+15.5) at No. 19 Minnesota -- Both teams can put a lot of points on the scoreboard, but the Gophers play better defence ... Minnesota 37-23.

Penn State (+3) at No. 20 Wisconsin -- The Badgers struggle to score, which will be their downfall as Penn State wins in my upset of the week ... Penn State 23-17.

BYU (+21.5) at No. 21 Boise State -- The Cougars have the weapons on defence to keep this one closer than most think ... Boise St. 42-26.

No. 22 Louisville (-8) at North Carolina -- The Tar Heels are a tough team to figure out, but Louisville is very consistent and should roll over UNC ... Louisville 41-21.

No. 23 Maryland (-17) at Duke -- The Terrapins are still trying to find their way on offence, but will get the job done against a weak Duke team ... Maryland 24-10.

Last week -- 15-2 straight up (45-4), 11-6 ATS (30-19).

Best bet -- Virginia (2-1 on the season).

Upset of the week -- Penn State (2-1 on the season).
