The Bombers have signed their top draft pick of 2014.

Former Simon Fraser Clansmen centre Matthias Goossen, taken with the second overall pick in the draft, is hoped to someday fill the hole in the Bombers' offensive line.

“We don’t want to stick him in and ruin him, get him shellshocked and ruin his confidence,” head coach Mike O’Shea said May 13, after Goossen was drafted. “If he shows us in camp what he believes he’s gonna show us and what we believe he can do and that’s the logical step for us, then he’ll be in there. If he needs a bit of time, then we’re quite willing to afford him that time to develop a little bit. He’s going to be a good player for a long time in this league.”

The 6-foot-4, 294-pound Richmond, B.C., native wasn’t making any grand proclamations about stepping in as Winnipeg’s starting centre right off the bat this season, either.
