WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have gone the safe route and taken Simon Fraser centre Matthias Goossen with the second overall pick in tonight’s CFL draft.

The centre the Bombers coveted most, according to several CFL sources, was Laval’s Pierre Lavertu, who went first overall to the Calgary Stampeders after they traded John Gott to the Ottawa RedBlacks.

Goossen’s draft stock took a dip after a not-so-strong performance at the CFL combine in Toronto in late March, but he was viewed as the player most ready to make the jump to the pros after Lavertu.

Goossen isn’t trained under Canadian rules football because B.C. high school uses four downs, as does Simon Fraser because it competes in an American conference. The Richmond, B.C., native was also coveted because he has played most positions on the offensive line.
