Blue Bombers rookie linebacker is Wild about CFL

 Ian Wild had to do a double-take earlier this season. It appeared a Blue Bombers fan was wearing his No. 38.

“That’s what I thought at first,” the rookie linebacker was saying, Wednesday. “But then it was like, ’Ah — no one does.’ ”

Oh, it was a 38 jersey, all right. With the name Reaves on the back. As in Willard, the great running back of the 1980s.

And so Wild went back to being the mostly anonymous 23-year-old that nobody notices — until he gets on the field.

That’s when he becomes one of the brighter lights in this darkest of Bomber seasons.

You know this team is having a rough year when I’m hanging around practice, looking for positives.

But when the year is one big, black hole with still three weeks to go, you need the odd break.

Wild has provided it, his latest effort — nine-tackles, three more on special teams and two pass knockdowns in Montreal, Monday — probably his best of the season.
