Winnipeg Blue Bombers acting GM Kyle Walters makes no apologies for trading the man who is arguably his team's most valuable player this season.
Walters shipped defensive end Alex Hall, the CFL sack leader, to Saskatchewan for offensive lineman Patrick Neufeld on Sunday.
"Anytime you get a chance to improve your Canadian content, that should take priority over your American talent," Walters said at a news conference today. "He (Neufeld) is a very good athlete. He's still growing. His bright years are ahead of him."
Factor in that Hall hasn't signed a contract extension because he wants to try the NFL next season, which scared a lot of teams away from a potential deal, and Walters didn't hesitate to pull the trigger.
As for the Bombers including a second-round draft pick in the deal — which figures to be the 11th overall pick, based on the current standings — and received just a fourth-rounder, Walters said the draft will be a thin one.
