WINNIPEG - Shannon Boatman was 17 years old when his doctor called him into his office and told him he had type 1 diabetes.

“It was pretty tough because at the time, when they found out, the doctor brought me in there and told me a month later I’d be pushing up daisies,” the Bombers offensive lineman said Friday. “That was real for me.”

Boatman had passed out at his Texas high school because his blood sugar level had rocketed. He had to start taking insulin shots immediately and still does today, 11 years later. Four times a day he gives himself a needle.

“I don’t need to take as much medicine,” Boatman said, “but I take the shots and the pills just to kind of keep it going.”
