Bombers head coach Tim Burke will not give into public pressure and is sticking behind quarterback Buck Pierce, but it’s not known if the pivot will be healthy enough to start on Friday against the Calgary Stampeders.

Burke said this afternoon that Pierce is still dealing with abdominal pain after taking a helmet to the stomach in the second quarter of Friday’s 35-19 loss to the Toronto Argonauts.

Pierce didn’t play in the second half, and his status probably won’t be known until Monday or Tuesday at the earliest.

“We might have to wait past (Monday) to make a decision,” Burke said. “We’ll at least go into the week as not knowing who the starting quarterback will be. We’ll just have to see. Can we make a decision by (Tuesday)? I would rather not go all the way to (Wednesday) to make that decision.”

Backup Justin Goltz played the second half of Friday’s game, and fans are clamouring for Burke to start him in the next game.
