It was a year late opening, so it was kind of fitting that some of the crowd was late for the first game.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers opened the sparkling new Investors Group Field on Wednesday night with a pre-season game against the Toronto Argonauts. There were glitches, naturally, but there was a word used most commonly by those who were seeing it for the first time: Wow.

“Walking through the gate, it was … wow. This is a very nice looking facility,” season ticket holder Ray Jones said. “Also when we got to the seats there’s a lot of space between the rows, and the open atmosphere of the concourse, it’s a beautiful thing. It’s nice to go up to the concessions and look down and keep any eye on the game when you’re in line.”

“You don’t have to worry like at the old stadium when you’re under the concourse. It’s great.”

Investors Group Field, which replaced the 59-year-old Canad Inns Stadium, is the first new CFL facility since Toronto’s SkyDome opened in 1989.
