MONTREAL - Joe Mack won't release Bombers defensive end Jason Vega before Feb. 15 because he doesn't want other potential NFLers on his team lined up at his office door.

Vega has a contract agreement in place with the NFL's New England Patriots, but he can't sign it until his CFL deal expires in the middle of next month. Other CFL teams this winter have released potential NFL-bound players early, but Winnipeg's general manager doesn't want to open that window.

"For all the players I'm really conscious of trying to do what's best for them and their families," Mack said. "I don't want them to lose a good opportunity. Having said that, what if Bryant Turner and Clarence Denmark and guys next year, what happens if they start saying the first week of December, 'Please let me go early.'?

"It starts a slippery slope for the Bombers, "¦ and I also don't want it to seem that we're kind of under cutting the CFL."
