WINNIPEG - Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach Tim Burke can strike one item off his things-to-worry-about list.
Defensive back Jonathan Hefney has re-signed with the team for two more years, a month before he could have become a free agent.
Comfortable in Winnipeg after four seasons here, Hefney said the only other option he considered was to give the NFL another shot.
“I had some opportunities,” the three-time East Division all-star said on the phone from South Carolina, Friday. “But I’ve been through it before. I’ve been through it and got released, and I felt like I did a pretty good job when I was there in Detroit.
“I sat down with my mom, talked to my dad and we prayed about it, and all of a sudden I just let it go after that. I was at peace with it. The opportunity may come again, you never know. Right now I’m at peace and I’m happy with the decision I made.”
At 28 years old next month, Hefney’s NFL window is likely closed.
