WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have locked up three impending free agents, although none of them were starters in 2012. Fourth-string quarterback Justin Goltz, and running backs Chris Garrett and Carl Volny have all inked new deals. They were poised to become free agents in February. Goltz has been waiting in the wings behind Buck Pierce, Alex Brink and Joey Elliott for the past two seasons, but he is expected to get a legitimate shot at the team’s starting quarterback gig at training camp. He has thrown just 14 passes over two-plus seasons. Garrett burst on to the scene late in the 2011 season and big things were expected from him this year, but he tore his Achilles tendon three days before the start of the regular season. He’ll have to win his job back in training camp because his replacement, Chad Simpson, was named Winnipeg’s most outstanding player in 2012. Volny, a non-import tailback, spent most of the 2012 campaign recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament he suffered against the Toronto Argonauts in September 2011.
