Blue Bombers coach Tim Burke big believer in Casey Creehan, but can he deliver?

One thing is certain: Blue Bombers coach Tim Burke’s sights were on Casey Creehan (above) all along. (TIGER-CATS.COM)

WINNIPEG - Tim Burke saved the best, and most dramatic, for last.

Wrapping up a media conference call to introduce defensive co-ordinator Casey Creehan, Thursday, the Blue Bombers boss had this to say about his first significant hire as a head coach.

“My goal is to make Winnipeg a contender for the Grey Cup. I want us to be a championship calibre team from here on out,” Burke said. “For me, a big piece of the puzzle has been solved.”

Pretty high praise for a guy whose debut as a defensive co-ordinator was a dud.

Creehan’s most recent body of work suggests Burke has missed the boat.

After all, he was at the helm of one of the worst defences in the CFL this past season.

On the surface, this looks more like a brilliant move by Hamilton Tiger-Cats head coach George Cortez.

You can almost see Cortez on the phone with Burke, pretending to reluctantly grant permission to speak with Creehan, while quietly pumping his fist.

What do you think of the name 'RedBlacks' for the new Ottawa CFL franchise?
  It's awful
  Guess it works
Meh, I don't follow the CFL
  Best name yet
