WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers appear to be a step closer to hiring a new defensive coordinator.

Two sources confirmed the Blue Bombers have fired assistant coach Chip Garber, whom new head coach Tim Burke said was one of three candidates to become his new defensive coordinator.

The Blue Bombers would neither confirm nor deny the firing had taken place, apparently abiding by a media embargo memo the CFL has sent out in an effort to keep the focus on the 2012 playoffs.

"Any coaching staff announcements will be made following the Grey Cup," said Blue Bombers media relations director Darren Cameron.

The dismissal of Garber helps clear the path for the return of Casey Creehan, who spent the past season with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

There are reports that Creehan has another year left on his contract, but there has been widespread speculation that he will be fired later this month by the Tabbies.

Burke and Creehan are close friends and worked together previously with the Blue Bombers, the Calgary Stampeders and Montreal Alouettes.

Former Blue Bombers defensive coordinator Greg Marshall is another potential candidate for the position, though Burke hinted at the time of his hiring that he was confident he could find someone with CFL experience that he had worked with before.
