WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers introduced a new president and CEO today, Garth Buchko taking over the position vacated by Lyle Bauer’s resignation, two years ago.
Buchko, a 53-year-old Winnipegger, joins the Bombers from CJOB, the team’s radio rights holder, where he served as general manager for the last 16 years.
“I am thrilled to join one of the most historic sports franchises in this country,” Buchko said in a statement.
Buchko will oversee the entire organization, including football operations, with GM Joe Mack reporting to him, and he to the board of directors.
His hiring comes after an extensive search the club says began with 75 identified candidates across North America, a list quickly whittled down to 11, with seven of them interviewed.
Buchko, whose background is in radio sales — he was also instrumental in the Bombers recently signing a seven-year broadcast deal with CJOB — pegged his biggest challenge to be next season’s transition to the new stadium.
Calling it a dream job, he said the success of the organization will begin with customer satisfaction.
He takes over the position held by Ossama AbouZeid on an interim basis since July.
