The Winnipeg Blue Bombers officially inked two of their draft picks and signed another CIS free agent on Wednesday.

The Bombers signed fifth-round draft pick Carl Volny and sixth-round selection Liam Mahoney, and they also officially brought linebacker John Surla into the fold.

Volny is a running back out of Central Michigan who was born in Montreal. The 5-foot-10, 195-pound tailback appeared in 12 games last season for the Chippewas, rushing for 402 yards and five touchdowns on 81 carries.

Mahoney, a 6-foot-1, 207-pound receiver from Lachine, Que., started out as a quarterback for the Concordia Stingers and then switched to receiver two years ago. He had 1,208 yards and 10 touchdowns over two seasons.

Surla, a 5-foot-10, 225-pound linebacker from the Western Ontario Mustangs, was the Ontario University Athletics defensive player of the year in 2009. He is a three-time All-Canadian who can also long snap, and the Bombers are looking for a backup for Chris Cvetkovic.

The Bombers have set their training camp schedule, and they’re going back to Brandon — for one day only.

The Bombers, who used to conduct their entire training camp in Brandon, will head to the Wheat City on Saturday, June 11, and have a two-hour practice between 1 and 3 p.m.

The team’s rookie camp starts on Wednesday, June 1, at Winnipeg Indoor Soccer Complex, and the veterans will report on June 4.

Main camp starts on Sunday, June 5, at 9:30 a.m. at Canad Inns Stadium.

Winnipeg’s two pre-season games are on June 16 in Montreal and on June 23 at home against Toronto.
