The more Obby Khan thought about it, the more he realized he wanted to stay in Winnipeg.

Sure, the Bombers eventually made it worth his while financially, but the little things added up and got the Canadian offensive lineman to re-sign on the bottom line.

Khan’s return to the Blue and Gold was reported two weeks ago, but the Bombers finally made it official on Wednesday. Khan was in Pakistan for a family vacation during his first foray into CFL free agency, which he said was probably good for his mental well-being.

“Being in Pakistan was the best thing for me because I would’ve gone crazy being here with the media, with people asking you, with the e-mails, with the phone calls,” said Khan, who is back in Winnipeg.

“When I was over there I didn’t hear from anybody except my agent.”

As Khan pondered offers from two other CFL teams, believed to be B.C. and Saskatchewan, several factors convinced him to remain in Blue and Gold.

“I really like the direction this team’s headed,” he said. “I really, really believe that. I have maybe five years left in my career, so I gotta win a Grey Cup soon or else it’s going to be over, and I really think we can do it here. That was a big reason.

“The other reason was playing in the city. I love this city. I’ve lived here for five years now. I have my roots here. I’m settled here. I have established a lot of good relationships here that I don’t want to leave.”

Khan, 30, came to Winnipeg from Ottawa in the 2006 dispersal draft, and he was voted the team’s top offensive lineman in his first season. He has been healthy for the last two years after missing most of 2007 and 2008 due to several injuries and his battle with colitis that led to the removal of his large intestine and severe weight loss.

The Ottawa native is also heavily involved in the community. He won the 2009 Ed Kotowich Good Guy Award, which recognizes the Bomber who combines ability, team camaraderie and community service.
