WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have named Tim Burke the team's new defensive co-ordinator.

Burke, who'll also handle Winnipeg's defensive backs, was the DC for Montreal the last three seasons, helping the Alouettes win back-to-back Grey Cups.

"He has experienced a great deal of success as a defensive co-ordinator in the Canadian Football League and we believe he'll do a great job of putting our players in a position to be successful," Winnipeg head coach Paul LaPolice said in a statement.

Burke's defence was ranked third in the CFL last season, No. 1 the year before that.

Prior to joining Montreal, he spent three seasons in Calgary, mainly coaching defensive backs. He also has more than 20 years experience in the NCAA.

He takes over from Kavis Reed, who left to become the head coach in Edmonton and who helped the Bomber defence rank second in total yards in 2010.

The Bombers have also retained defensive line coach Richard Harris, who had been wooed by Saskatchewan.

Harris, the longest-serving Winnipeg assistant with five seasons under his belt, is now the assistant head coach to LaPolice.
