Palardy makes strong case to stick around

He may have been the most effective emergency replacement for a player who has yet to play for the Blue Bombers ever.

Kicker Just in Palardy answered Winnipeg's SOS after import placekicker Louie Sakoda suffered a pulled calf muscle during pre-game warmups on Aug. 13. Palardy, a Canadian, connected on five of six field goals since taking over. But Sakoda, an import, is expected to return to practice Wednesday and could be available to suit up when the Bombers play against the Argonauts in Toronto this Sunday.

"I know Louie comes back next week, but for myself I just need to keep putting it through," Palardy said after Sunday's 31-2 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders. "I just want to help the team win, right? So I'll keep working on my kickoffs and keep being consistent and hopefully I get to play next week."

Palardy nailed a 38-yard field goal despite whirling winds at Canad Inns Stadium on Sunday.

"You're trying to judge the wind," he said. "On one side of the field, it's in your face, and on the other side of the field, it's in your face. The wind was all over the place.

"You just need to hit it hard and hit it low against the wind."

While Sakoda may be ready to return, it is not a given that he will. Palardy will not have to fight the wind in Toronto and Sakoda's import status could mess with the ratio. Besides, the Bombers may not want to mess with a winning combination.

IN LIMBO: There was no update on Winnipeg's negotiations with Canadian RB Jesse Lumsden on Tuesday. Bomber GM Ross Hodgkinson did not return messages left through messages sent to a club media relations rep, which is the way the club insists on doing business these days.

Hodgkinson did say Monday that WR Titus Ryan has not interest in returning to Winnipeg, although the Bombers still own his CFL rights. The Bombers also own the rights to WR Dudley Guice Jr., but do not seem interested in bringing him back. Both were recent NFL cuts.
