WINNIPEG - They're going deep to build the Winnipeg Blue Bombers' new stadium.

But on their first day of action, two excavators are only scratching the surface of what will eventually become a massive pit from which the stadium will develop at the University of Manitoba.

The excavators began Wednesday digging at the Fort Garry campus site at University Crescent and Chancellor Matheson Road, kicking off an approximately two-year construction process toward completion -- hopefully in 2012 -- of the 33,000-seat complex for the CFL's Blue Bombers and U of M Bisons football team.

The initial work by S & J Construction Ltd. has begun several weeks after it had been expected to, following a ground-breaking ceremony on May 20.

And it comes as Creswin Properties chairman David Asper, Premier Greg Selinger and Mayor Sam Katz, in addition to the Winnipeg Football Club and U of M, continue to work out design and cost issues for the project.

The central issue remains whether the development will cost $115 million, or much more -- and how a hike in the price tag would be paid for.
