It’s official: Buck Pierce is the Winnipeg Blue Bombers starting quarterback.

Head coach Paul LaPolice made the news official after Wednesday’s practice at Rods Field.

“It feels good,” said Pierce, who was released by the B.C. Lions in the off-season. “It’s been a long off-season just trying to get back to this point, and I’m excited. When you work hard and prepare yourself, good things will happen.

“I’m just excited to go into the season and have a chance to be the guy that they need me to be.”

Pierce is No. 1, Steven Jyles is No. 2 and Alex Brink is No. 3. Most figured Pierce would be the starter based on his experience, and LaPolice said the veteran’s five years in the CFL showed early on in camp.

“In the 16 days of practice and two exhibition games he was accurate, he made the throws he needed to make, he put us in the end zone a lot, and he commanded the team,” LaPolice said. "… In three or four days he was making throws that really surprised me and executed them very well.”

In other Bomber news, LaPolice said long snapper Chris Cvetkovic suffered a significant knee injury in Sunday’s pre-season game against Hamilton and will miss the 2010 season.

LaPolice said the Bombers have to release only “a couple more” players before Thursday’s CFL roster deadline of 46 players and seven-man practice roster.
