The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have re-signed kicker Alexis Serna, preventing him from reaching the CFL free-agent market.

Serna will be entering his third season as a Bomber.

"This is a very positive step ... to re-sign a player of Alexis' caliber," Ross Hodgkinson, Bomber interim vice-president of football operations, said in a statement. "We have seen great progression in the past two years. He's a great guy to have around the locker room and a very solid kicker in this league."

Concentrating on just the placekicking duties, Serna connected on 40 of 49 field goals last season, scoring 161 points.

He improved significantly from his rookie year, when he struggled with the placekicking and punting jobs.

His signing leaves cornerback Jovon Johnson as Winnipeg's key pending free agent, although it's believed the Bombers are close to a new deal with Johnson, too.
