The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have lost defensive back Jonathan Hefney to the NFL.

The all-star halfback signed a contract with the Detroit Lions on Monday, the first day that CFL players going into their option year can ink deals down south, according to the CFL-NFL agreement.

Hefney was the CFL East Division’s rookie of the year after recording 66 tackles, four interceptions and five special teams tackles in 2009.

The native of Rock Hill, S.C., has had NFL tryouts with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Philadelphia Eagles, but he failed to make either roster.
